ietnam isn't the same as what it was in the 70's or 80's, they are starting to open right up again. IMHO 6 Sigmas (the bigger versions with the organic helo) would compliment the Gepards rather well. Vietnam has a good navy and why should they limit their options to one source for arms supply. India offering Brahmos makes sence too, they are becoming a formidable supplier of weapons and the quallity of their weapons if becoming comparible to those of both east and west!

Wow, you can certainly see the origins of the Peoples Navy in these pics- just don't mention the French to them and you will be ok ;)

indeed, Russia has few good allies (i don't use friends here), but Vietnam is one of them.. many common interests.. and fortunately far enough from each other to limit potential problems (neighbors tend to suck) :diablo:

But nevertheless, yes..Vietnam is diversifying.. still buying Russian of course..but what I've seen: Dutch ships, Israeli tank upgrades, Polish Helicopters, French helicopters, Polish transports, among others..

interesting, they are switching to 105mm on their tanks.. must mean huge change in their ammo stocks. Israeli, swiss, and french stuff too.. looks like they are serious in diversifying their weapons procurement

Perhaps China should return the favor and arm the neighbors of Israel with their own equipment. The way Vietnam is arming itself nowadays this has potential to be a pot stirring situation. :o

I suspect Vietnam's arming has to do with China's huge defense budget increases over the past decade.

It's just business. The Israelis are selling on commercial terms. They were happy to supply China, e.g. with Harpy anti-radar drones & Phalcon AEW, until the USA leant on 'em.

Vietnam's forces are no threat to China. They're only meant to be enough to make the Chinese think twice before bullying Vietnam. No pot stirring there.

What is there to retaliate for? And what neighbours does Israel have that it would be unhappy about China selling weapons to on the same terms Israel sells to Vietnam, i.e. at a profit? JF-17s to Egypt? So what?

Ammunition doesn't last forever. They'd have to replace a lot of it anyway. The 100mm shells which aren't time-expired will do for the unmodernised tanks.

so if China can build numbers of new ships, modernize a carrier, build new airplanes, etc.. Vietnam is not allowed to do the same?

Interesting, esp. because the Gepards don't carry Kashtan but rather Palma/Palash and hence a different SAM.

Palma (NATO designation CADS-N-2), also referred-to as Palash-Palma, uses the main principles in the Kortik/Kashtan CIWS but is designed for use with SACLOS (Semi-Automatic Command to Line of Sight) missiles, such as the Russian Federation Sosna-R (9M337) and western systems such as Stinger and Mistral. Development was completed in 2003.
...
it is expected to be deployed at sea operationally for the first time in a Vietnamese Gepard-class frigate
