they bought 4 sigma during the 2011 visit. will be interesting to see how those stack up against the new 056 corvette class that has just been introduced by plan and will most likely mass produced in the next year or so.

All the links from 2011 are confirmation of negotiations, nothing firm.
Though if signed, that will be 8 new frigates, probably within the first 5 years of this decade alone.

Sigma have got a new competitor from Russia and it would be better for Vietnam to invest in these... The new design is based on the Pr.21631 Buyan-M, which is modified version of the Pr.21630 Buyan. These can definitely compliment the Gepards.
These would be very good for not just Vietname but also for Indonesia who have got lot of Islands spread across to patrol. The Russian option definetely would be cheaper than the European ones. Till now Russia did not have a class of ship to compete with Sigma, but it looks like JSC Zelenodlsk Design Bureau have come up with a right sized one.
Sigma stands for Ship Integrated Geometrical Modularity Approach. The ship's main dimensions are named in the types itself, SIGMA 9113 stands for 91 meters long and 13 meters wide, same is with the SIGMA 10513, 105 meters in length and 13 meters wide.
Indonesia has four 9113 class corvettes (1,692 tons) in active service by 2009 and in August 2010 has signed a deal to build frigate PKR 105 based on SIGMA 10514 in PT PAL Shipyard Indonesia. (2400 tons)
Morocco has ordered two 9813 class heavy corvettes (with VLS) 2075 tons and a light 10513 class frigate based on a modified design. 2335 tons
Vietnam has negotiated four SIGMA in October 2011 by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung's visiting to Netherlands. The Dutch Schelde shipyard in Vlissingen, Netherlands will build four Sigma corvettes for the Vietnamese Navy. The first two ships will be built in Vlissingen, and the last two will be built in Vietnam, under Dutch supervision

Damen Shipyards has signed an agreement with the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin) in Hanoi, one of the larger Vietnamese state-owned enterprises, for the joint building and exploitation of a wharf/yard in Haiphong. That yard will be named Damen Vinashin Shipyard. Vinashin has designated the Song Cam Shipyard as local partner. The first phase is to be completed februari 2012.
The yard will deliver about 12 ships per annum. All orders are to date for export. The yard will gave a Syncrolift shiplift, with a capacity of 2500 ton, a finishing hall of 80 by 40 meters and various workbuildins and offices. In the second phase of the five-year plan the capacity will be extended to max. 30 workboats, tugs and fast craft per year in the finishing hall of 160 by 150 meters. The Vietnam Marine Police also cooperated with Damen Group to build large vessels with Dutch license, such as one offshore patrol vessel 9014, one hydrographic survey vessel 6613, four salvage tugs 6412.[7][8] These vessels will be built in Vietnam by the Song Thu company.
We can see from the above spec itself the displacement difference between Pr.21630 & Pr.21631. The ship that started with 550tons have grown to 949 tons and the Sigma class in its smallest variant starts at 1,692tons.
Now look again the new model displayed, it is based on the Pr.21361 but it is longer and hence will likely displace higher than the Pr.21361. I don't know its dimensions so cant tell about its beam or draught or length. But we can assume that it will be displacing atleast 500 tons more (considering 21360 & 21361). Add that figure and what we get is a ship that is atleast about 1500 tons in displacement. So the new model has to be similar in displacement to the Sigma.
This model represent a scalable design and a perfect example from the Russian design bureau. Now the last major scalable design that we heard about was when the Pr.22350 was launched. It was then said the design was scalable to higher tonnage, so there is a chance the speculated new destroyer for RuN be based on the Pr.22350..

Defence & Security USS Blue Ridge visits Vietnam
USS Blue Ridge, flag ship of the U.S. Navy 7th Fleet, on April 23 will join a number of group ships to Da Nang to start his visit to Vietnam.
Flagship USS Blue Ridge weighs 19,000 tons and has been active on the payroll of the U.S. Navy from 1970 to present. USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19) is the lead ship of the two Blue Ridge-class command ships of the U.S. Navy, and is the command ship of the United States Seventh Fleet. Her primary role is to provide Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (C4I) support to the commander and staff of the United States Seventh Fleet. She is currently forward-deployed to US Navy Fleet Activities, Yokosuka, Japan and is the third Navy ship named after the Blue Ridge Mountains, a range of mountains in the Appalachian Mountains of the eastern United States.
With USS Blue Ridge, joined visit to Vietnam this time there are missile destroyer USS Chafee, USNS Safeguard, Task Force 73 and Force logistics Western Pacific region Ocean, as well as diving and rescue teams working.
Official welcome ceremony will be held at the Tien Sa port, Da Nang province. This ceremony will be attended by U.S. Ambassador at Vietnam David Shear; 7th Fleet commander, Vice Admiral Scott Swift; officials and American commanders.

Vietnam want to purchase 18 Su-30K
The group of Vietnam military experts go to Belarus expressed desire to buy 18 Su-30K aircraft modernize the Su-30KN standard.
This will be the first time there are two companies of Russian weapons in Vietnam market. Previously, the delivery of Su-30 aircraft for Air Force Vietnam were conducted in the aircraft factory Aviation Association in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, a member of the Corporation National Aeronautics Russia (UAC). 18 Su-30K aircraft are located in Belarus and owned by the Corporation Irkut aviation, the company is part of the UAC.
For 18 Su-30K aircraft in Belarus, the price will be $ 270 million (about $ 15 million for an aircraft has been modernized), compared with the current value of the 18 new Su-30 (more than $ 1 billion).
In 1996, Russian technology was not sufficient to generate 18 advanced fighter jets Su-30MKI aircraft that India has offered to buy. So Russia has produced with the abbreviated configuration Su-30K. But then India has asked to replace the Su-30K aircraft by a similar number of Su-30MKI aircraft more advanced configuration and return 18 Su-30K for Irkut Corporation.

Good idea for Vietnam to snap up those Su-30K, for $270million and upgraded to KN standard its a bargain. Vietnam has already stated that it wanted to expand its Su-30 fleet further this is an opportunity not to be passed up.
It will be interesting to see if Vietnam starts to consider some force enablers like an AEW&C type.

I would be not at all surprised - IMHO Vietnam is one of the markets for military hardware with the highest growth potential in the coming years, and Russia is in a leading position to reap the benefits. Sure, the modernisation process is already under way at a relatively modest level, but for a 90 million population with a dynamic economy and territorial disputes with a neighbour like China this can only be the beginning.
I expect them to maintain a predominantly defensive stance, but even so the geography of their territorial claims leaves plenty of scope for purchases of a notionally offensive nature such as blue water capability and tanker aircraft.

In the next few years, Vietnam will join the top three importers of Russian arms, said Igor Korotchenko, director general of the World Arms Trade Analytic Center (WATAC).

Russian have finished the first of six submarines for Vietnam Navy
The first Vietnam's 636 Submarine Kilo class diesel-electric will be launched at the shipyard Admiralteiskye (St Petersburg) in August this year - a source of information from the defense industry The Russian said this on Tuesday.
December 2009, Prime Minister of Vietnam Nguyen Tan Dung signed a contract to purchase six Russian Kilo class submarines worth about 2 billion 636 million U.S. dollars.
The first submarine under the contract to be launched in August this year, then will start the test cycle of the ship, - the source said. Also according to this person, before the end of 2012, the first submarine to deliver to the order. All contracts are scheduled for completion in 2016.
The 636 submarine is 3100 tons of water, speed 20 knots / hour, the ability to dive 300 meters deep, with a crew of 52 people. It is equipped with weapons such as torpedoes 533 mm (six units), landmines, Kalibr rocket attack combinations. Russian have finished the first of six submarines for Vietnam Navy

August 2, in the AnBinh, bienhoa City, Province dongnai, Command Navy Region 2 held a ceremony to announce the decision of the secretary of Defense on the establishment of the Naval Radar Regiment 251.
251 regiments formerly Radar Radar 251 battalion, stationed at Province Dong Nai belong to Naval Zone 2, with two long-range radar airspace and sea.
Earlier, on July 16, 351 Regiment Naval Radar has been established in Region 3 Navy (Da Nang city). Founded 2 Naval Radar Regiment

Russian have finished the first of six submarines for Vietnam Navy
