Can A340 be described as a French copy of Il-96?
A340 sold how often against competition?
Il-96 sold how often?
Where did the Il-96 get chosen over the A340 in a real competition (remember: Russia still charges 38% tax on imported aircraft)?
--> The A340 is the (much) better aircraft.
And the fact that it has 4 engines does not make it a copy.

True since A330 and A340 are quite the same

-The short answer to the original question is undoubtedly no.
AFAIK, there have less than 80 Il-96s of all marks produced, but over 300 A340-300s.
There is no doubt which aircraft has been more successful.
I do like the Il-96, though. Pity the Il-96M/Il-96T didn't gain more international orders.

Airbus says that there has been 243 A340-200 and A340-300 produced - even fewer A340-300s when the -200s are excluded.
But the orderbook looks worse. 3 frames ordered in total. I think 2 are for Finnair and 1 for a private customer.
And that is all.
I think that Il-96 orderbook is bigger than 3...

but a total of 23 Ilyushin 96's produced since 1988 is hardly a runaway cash bonanza is it?
my production listings for A340's gives the following currently in production or about to go on the line
2 Etihad
1 Thai Intl
2 Iberia
3 Kingfisher
1 Algerian Gvmt
3 Lufthansa
and the total at end of 2007 was I believe 389 ordered 348 delivered of which A340-313 219 ordered 211 delivered

-The original variant of the Ilyushin IL96 was designed to comply with an Aeroflot requirement for a direct replacement for the Ilyushin IL62M and IL86 and nothing more. Therefore any comparison with the Airbus A340 is meaningless apart from its physical appearance maybe. The the IL96 was intended to comply with the requirements of the Soviet bloc airlines and those of allied states rather than to directly compete with the A340 or any other type for that matter. Had the Soviet system lasted longer I have no doubt that we would be seeing many more of them around today. A lovely aircraft none the less:)

The export customers of Il-96 are:
Air Libya
Cubana
Syrian Arab Airlines
Sirocco Aerospace
Air Zimbabwe
Conviasa
International Air Leasing
Armavia
and an unknown group from China.

Only few of them regurlarly shops at Airbus or Boeing.
Armavia trashed (in a pretty stupid still sad way) an A320 a few years back.

I'm going with the trolling option. :)

-Conviasa has an A340 already - and has ordered Il-96. So, for them adding more A340-s would be an option - but they prefer Il-96 instead.

Conviasa is a state-owned airline. The state here is Venezuela. And Venezuela was not known for rationale decisions lately. It operates one A340-200, besides its one B767-300 and 2 B737-200 and 2 -300. 6 aircraft with a total residual value of 120 million USD.
Not exactly a benchmark customer.
Besides that, any A340 they buy would have American content (CFM56-C is half GE).
