It looks sleek.
Congrat to J
What kind of engines is on that thing?
Regarding the engines, these are indigenous IHI XF5-1 turbofans delivering 49.03 kN (11,023 lbf) with afterburner.
As such all this hype about a new Japanese stealth fighter are bit over the top IMO ... is is a giant leap - most likely especially technology-wise - but this bird is not a fighter. It is simply what it is: a demonstrator.

A fighter's "Primary" role does not have to be A2A if it can "conduct operations without prohibitive interference by the opposing force."
These definitions are complete nonsense.. You need a completely different technology level to achieve Air Dominance or Air Supremacy over Burkina Faso and the same over Mainland China. For the former, even an F-4E would be good enough.. For the latter, even the F-22 is insufficient.. period.

its just a demonstrator japan is using to get the Americans to give up greater amount of tech transfer. same thing happened with the british and their replica. japan doesn't have the political capabilities to go through with it because they know the Americans will quickly stop it.
but i will give them credit. shape wise looks stealtheir than pakfa demonstrator, has actual sducts, proably in similar level to the j-31 but under j-20

And exactly how would the Americans stop it? Declare war on Japan?

What a large recess for such a small hook.
What are the grey lines at inlet level on the underside are telling us?
On an operational jet, the hook bay would be covered by doors (e.g. F-117, F-22, F-35). For a flying qualities demonstrator, doors are not necessary and could inhibit emergency use of the hook if normal braking were to fail.
The grey areas contain two different types of low observable features. Some are conductive seals around access panels and doors. The other type (grey areas) are X-band cutoff sized perforated panels for heat exchanger exhaust or bay ventilation. Both types of features allow electrical charges to run freely across the jet's outer mold line with a minimum of discontinuity. Discontinuities are bad because they cause RF scattering.

Agreed.
You should remind your fellow posters on F-16.net about the very same, when it comes to other AF, and especially China, India and Russia AF..

I know the gear was down, but notice how the F2 effortlessly keeps up on dry power.
Nonetheless, a considerable indigenous achievement and moment of pride.

Surely not, but it is not so much uncommon to leave it out for the first flight...

Mitsubishi regional jet majority of flight testing in US.
Japan is the weakest and most depended country on US. It need NAFTA and Chinese labor.
US envoy has told Turkey that national projects have no economic importance. I presume the same approach will adopted to Japan.

yes indeed..plain eye-ball Mk1 is enough for him to pass judgement on the prototypes stealthiness compared to other fighters.

Yes. Noticed also the usage of full AB.
@ DJ:
Thank you.
For the recess, I had in mind that it looked a bit oversized for the hook that can be spotted in place.
