LOL why? so it could fly under powered and carry less while being more smokey at the same time? horrible idea.
the MiG-23's current engine has way more thrust.
Al-31 MiG-23's however are more doable and has been done on the 27
Like Fulcrum29 said the MiG-23s( both attacker and interceptor) are long out of service, so are MiG-21s etc .
One of the things i'm very interested is, what will be the next combat aircraft for Algeria ? More Su-30MKAs? Su-35? MiG-35? Maybe a western aircraft ?! Also wonder what's gonna happen with their MiG-29, are they going to be replaced fairly shortly ( end of airframe hours?) or given a proper upgrade a la SMT/UPG?
Would assume that if everything goes well and current political trends continue, PAK-FA will be a given in the early twenties (even earlier , who knows)

I think Algerians have expressed their stance towards MiG-29SMT clearly when they rejected the whole fleet and ordered more MKAs instead.
The next on the list would be something of different origin as they are looking for the low end of the mix. I think something like FC-1 or Gripen would fit in.

What about their struggling Mig-29 fleet? Their lifetime ended in 2010-11 and all needed overhaul and life extension. Most of them once served in 787 iap, Finow (Eberswalde), Soviet 16th Air Army in East Germany.

Aparently they are /will be overhauled in Belarus. This algerian MiG-29 could have been photographed there some time ago (note Su-17 in the background), but i'm not 100% sure.
Presumably, from take-off magazine , don't know what year.

Well i'm just posting a few pics from forcesdz and found elsewhere, it's amazing how much is outthere about Algerian Air Force. You just have to look.
Btw a slightly revised AAF census from an "official" source (Algerian media) lists the 28+16 Su-30MKA (44), 30 MiG-29 and UB, 13 MiG-25P/PD, the 16 Yak-130 , plus 14 trainers to be added soon (unclear what kind of trainers , are they jets, primary, multiengine tec.) No word on Su-24s but if we take the 17 received before 1991, and the other rumoured 22 from 2001, then there must still be about 40 give or take of them at least incl. MRK and the rumoured MPs (i think the frequently quoted 22 figure in western media refers only to the ones bought after 2001 , while it is clear that Su-24s were operational in AAF at the beggining of the nineties).
Also 6 C-295s already handed to the AF (Boufarik AB), while Beech C90s are on order from US (maybe they refer to the 3 received in 2011 or there will be more of them?)
FULCRUM29, what year is that older video showing the MiG-23MF/BN , MiG-25P , Su-24 , L-39 etc is it 1992 or 1994 ? Thanks.:)
