Why Rogachevo Air Base is key to Russian military operations in the Arctic

Alexander Mladenov looks at the prospects of further development of Rogachevo Air Base on Novaya Zemlya archipelago – key to airspace control over the Western sector of the strategically important Northern Sea Route in the frigid High North of Russia.

A strategic remote outpost in the Russian Arctic, Rogachevo is set to be turned into a major air base with significant logistics functions to support Russia’s ongoing extension of the perimeter of its national interests. The airfield had played such a role for many decades during the Soviet era. Situated on Novaya Zemlya archipelago, its principal mission today is to control the airspace over a major swathe on the western end of the Northern Sea Route (NSR).
