I was listening to the news the other day on the radio and it said that a GR4 squadron from lossiemouth was getting ready to deploy to afghanistan to replace the current people out there. Is this just a case of bad reporting or has the UK decided to deploy the whole squadron instead of the previous 10 aircraft from a squadron. I think there are 12 aircraft in the squadron's so this is an upgrade of 2.
The way the person was talking made it sound like the aircraft were going over as well. I'm not sure of this will be happening as it is probably easier to keep the aircraft that are already there.

Here is a link to story about the Tornado and the weapon of choice in Afghanistan the Paveway IV. It seems like the tornado's fly with these and mostly Brimstone's in afghanistan missions.

In a seperate issue there is a story about how the Tornado F3 has been voted the best RAF fighter of all time. It norrowly beat the Phantom. I'm not sure if would of picked the F3 it's more of an interceptor i thought. I last thing does anyone have any pictures of RAF tornado flying with RAF Phantoms?
Here is a link to the story.

The aircraft are rotated through the Sandbox to maintain a similar level of flying hours across the fleet as well as to allow for maintainance which cannot be done in the field, however, each new set of pilots don't turn up with their own aircraft.

What's the sandbox? Is that RAF speak for a maintence yard. I wonder how often they are rotated? It will be interesting to find out how many aircarft are there. I'm not sure how many aircraft have been fitted with the TERRA? ECM pod. I don't know if they are just available for the afghan environment or whether they are going to be implemented accross the fleet.
If the UK is deploying 10-12 ground attack aircraft, How does this compare to other countries aircraft number's?

Sandbox is just military slang for in general the 'Middle East'. In this case the 'sandbox' is Afghanistan.

Just out of interest and maybe a bit of a silly question, but, is it actually possible to fit rocket pods (like the those fitted on the Harrier) to the missile rails on the Tornado GR4? Its not impossible I guess and even with the swing wing...Just need to make some adjustments here and there?
