We have all heard of Star Wars and military satellites and weapons in space. But practically how far are we from the day when we will have aircraft that will take of from land -go into space - target their weapons and fire and return to earth.

It depends... if you mean manned, then Buran was designed with a military role, unmanned then the FOBS variant of the SS-9 system would qualify.

There are agreements banning the use of sapce to base weapons. So far only sensors (IR, Radar, and optical cameras) have been based in space. Positioning weapons would violate that treaty (can't remember what it is called off the top of my head though.).
