anyone know if the museum a/c are still there or have they been snaffled-up for rebuilds?

Hi,
Reading through the posts on scrap yards, I remembered photos I had taken years ago that might do, but thought I should show them as a seperate thread.
In 1987, whilst still 'StudentStirling', I had the opportunity to work in the Solomon Islands for 9 weeks. I was on Guadalcanal for 7 and Gizo for 2 weeks.
The Canal is an amazing place, war relics were everywhere - I was even working in one: The Hospital was the ninth instalation to be built by the Americans after they landed, and was still known simply as 'Number 9'. The pidgin English for 'lots' was 'stacka', after the stacks of stores that appeared everywhere!
Just outside Honiara is the Vilu War Museum, where I took the a/c photos. GC is quite an unstable place these days, so I don't expect to get a return visit.

I also went to Red Beach - the spot where the Marines landed. This was the first time the Americans had made an offensive gain in the War, and was a real turning point. It is marked by the canon left in the sand.
The last picture is a parting shot of the old Henderson Field control tower. All around was the scene of fierce fighting and the ground is littered with Fox holes and UXB's. The original tower was wooden and did not survive the fighting, this one was put up after the battle and served the remainder of the war, and for some time after.
The most increbible thing I did was to learn to SCUBA dive. One of my training dives was on the B17 Bessie The Jap Basher. My u/w photos did not come out, but it was an increbible experince to swim in a B17!
