Hallo,

I am trying to find out if there is any source or method to match Spitfire Mk. I serial numbers to a type of stencil marking on the tail area.

Two of these stencils I know of are;
'SR / 6S / 56565 / CX' (reputedly R6629 but this cannot be correct) and
'6S / 56802 / CX' (possibly R6884).

Has anything been published on such markings ?

Regards in hope,

Martin Gleeson.

They are the factory construction numbers. CX is for Cellon X, a doping material used on fabric areas.

Hallo Antoni,

Thanks for that information, it was new to me. Any idea where I might find a list of those construction numbers ?

Martin.

There are no records I am aware of for individual component serial numbers unfortunately.

65 is Supermarine if I remember correct .

Its 6S - an often made error!

Many thanks to all. The constructors numbers are very interesting but it does not seem possible to match them with the losses involved. Not just that but they do not run in sequence with the aircraft serial numbers. Thanks for clarifying this puzzle for me, insofar as I can stop going down this path. It sems to be a dead end.

Regards,

Martin.
