I'm looking for a list of operational UK-based RAF fighter Squadrons between the years of 1968 and 1970, operating either Lightnings or F4s

Would anyone be able to point me in the direction of an authoritative list?

Thanks in advance.

I'd suggest looking them up in "RAF Squadrons: A Comprehensive Record of the Movement and Equipment of All RAF Squadrons and Their Antecedents Since 1912" by C.G. Jefford. An incredibly reliable book.

I just noticed your dates specification!

Two good sites to look up are these from Gary Lakin, Lightnings http://www.aviation-picture-hangar.co.uk/Lightnings_squadron_page.html & Phantoms http://www.aviation-picture-hangar.co.uk/Phantoms_squadron_page.html
Some great info on dates and Squadrons etc.

If I have read right it seems that in the 1968-'70 period,
Lightnings were operated by 5, 11, 23, 29, 56, 74, 111 Squadrons with F.3/6s, 19 & 92 with F.2As (all with various T.4/5 aircraft aswel), and 226 OCU.
Phantoms equiped 2, 6, 14, 17, 43, 54 squadrons, and 228 OCU.

Fascinating period.

Phantoms equiped 2, 6, 14, 17, 43, 54 squadrons, and 228 OCU.

Depending on the definition of 'fighter', of those only 43 was technically a fighter squadron in that time period - 2,6,14,17 and 54 being ground attack roled, and 2, 14 and 17 were based in Germany.

Lightnings were operated by 5, 11, 23, 29, 56, 74, 111 Squadrons with F.3/6s, 19 & 92 with F.2As (all with various T.4/5 aircraft aswel), and 226 OCU.

19 and 92 were based in Germany, 74 in Singapore and 56 was in Akotiri,

so the UK based Air Defence Squadrons operating Phantoms and Lightnings in that timescale were:

5 Lightning (Binbrook)
11 Lightning (Leuchars)
23 Lightning (Leuchars)
29 Lightning (Wattisham)
43 Phantom FG1 - (Leuchars)

111 Lightning (Wattisham)

I should learn to read more thoroughly!:o

Nice summarization Dave, hopefully the links provided should help Simon out with who operated what and when.

Will delete post#2 as irrelevant.

Many thanks to all for their considered replies - particularly DaveF68.

That has given me enough to go on for a while...
