The 60's and 70's had some really interesting aeroplane designs (by human not computer). Here is a selection of those types.

NLM City Hopper Fokker F-27 landing at Gatwick
- For a 1950s design the Friendship is a lovely looking aeroplane :)

TAROM IL-18 overshooting at Gatwick
- Looks like a Soviet Vickers Vanguard to me

Nor-Fly Convair 580 departing Heathrow
- Not many convair twins were in European airline use

Nord Noratlas of French Air Force at RIAT USAF 1980
- I took this photo from airside at Greenham Common

Guernsey Airlines Handley page Herald at Gatwick

Dan-Air London Airspeed Ambassador WFU at Lasham Base
- Alright, this was alongside an Avro York

British Airways Vanguard Merchantman departing Heathrow
- Last of the Vanguards converted to Cargo use

Balkan Bulgarian Airlines Antonov An-12 at Heathrow
- Ugly and underpowered

Aviaco Fokker F-27 at Majorca
- Nice livery for the Friendship

Air Inter Mercure and Friendship at Orly
- The Mercure was a strange beast

Air France Aero Postal Transall c-160
- This was used for postal operations only

Air Express International Canadair CL44-D4 swingtail at Heathrow
- Another strange turboprop with a swinging tail unit

Good photos....the Noratlas and Ambassadors are piston not turboprop engined, though and the An-12 is beautiful, not ugly :)

Thanks guys,

Longshot, I personally love the C-130. Some say it is ugly but I think it is a nicely balanced shape, like the 707. Not seen many An-12s in my life but I can see why you might like it. Especially compared to the earlier An-10.

The Ambassador was at Dan-Air's Lasham maintenance base but I guess it must have been given to Duxford from the comment. This is how it looked after maybe 2 or 3 years' of being withdrawn from airline ops.

You can post more of these any time. That Tarom IL18 is a stunner. See how far ahead of the game Tarom was by putting its name on the underside in large lettering. I believe that there is a middle eastern carrier that adopted the same idea. Nothing new under the sun I guess. Someone once told me that the Romanians did this to avoid their own ground forces accidentally shooting one of their airliners down! Personally, I doubt that there was any truth in that;) Can't agree with you ref the An12, not ugly, and able to carry a reasonable payload to where it had to go, can't ask more of a freighter than that:)

I think you may be right about TAROM markings. The Tupolev Tu154 did not have large underwing markings I think. What I like about TAROM is that they had a mixed east/west manufactured fleet.

OK guys, sorry about calling the An-12 ugly! 'Interesting' might be a better way of putting it.

Hi Interflug62M

What makes it beautiful to you? It is not well proportioned is it? Small flaps must have meant no stol ability. The An-10 was ugly and the An-12 is a massive improvement on that Soviet disaster. I once saw an An-12 with triangles (Iraqi Air Force maybe) flying overhead. It sounded sweet and looked rakish and interesting. But beautiful? hmmm... ;)

Again some lovely stuff and lots of people like "the ugly ones".I missed the An22 when it came back to Farnborough once in the early 90s but it looked a treat from photos coming in that day..cheers:)

Sarah, I suppose its the same with most things, beauty being in the eyes of the beholder. As with all the Antonovs, except the An124 and 225, the trade mark outer anhedral design of the Soviet era Antonovs just looks cool. I worked quite often with An12s during the 80s/90s and if you have never stood close to either the An12 or IL18 on start up and initial taxy off stand, then you just havn't lived;) and as for the 'sooty' take off of them both.....just priceless. I worked an An22 departure from STN just once, and it was like entering a giant submarine! I think that it was the first visit of the type to STN. The start up and initial taxy of that prop driven leviathan was incredible, and thats leaving aside the take off, sounded like a giant airship! Thats beauty for me.......but of course, for others, maybe not so;)

Wow! Sad to see such aeroplanes in such a poor state. Love the An-8 photo. I never heard of that one but it is like a baby An-12. Sweet. :)

The An-22 looks like a cargo sister of the passenger Tu-114 - all propellors.

Antonovs LHR

'civilspotters' An-8 may look pure and white but wasn't Air Cess owned by Victor Bout the Russian International Arms Dealer who's now in jail?
Until this thread I hadn't really compared the An-8,-10,-12...the An-8 has a 'square' section fuselage so presumably is unpressurized...the An-10 was a passenger version with a rounded (pressurized?) fuselage was it not? and the An-12 was a rear -ramped military version of the -10 . Surprising how few of the Antonov-make have visited Heathrow over the years 16 on Airliners.net (including VeeOne's :))
http://www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?aircraft_genericsearch=&airlinesearch=&countrysearch=&specialsearch=&daterange=&keywords=antonov+lhr&range=&sort_order=photo_id+desc&page_limit=30&thumbnails=
and 18 on abpic including the 2 'Aeroflot' examples which shut down LHR for an hour in July 1970

How does that AirNikon thing work, VeeOne? not noticed that before on A.net
