-The number 173970 is likely the Air Ministry engine number. If so, your data plate is from one of the 1584 Merlin III engines ordered from RR as part of contract B 58639/39 C.28(a). The AM engine numbers for the batch are 173802 to 175385.

-The contract was 1939. Perhaps someone with access to RR archives would know?

Hello everyone,
I have a very battered crash recovered Rolls Royce Merlin engine plate. Sadly its broken into 3 pieces.
It’s a bit of a long shot but can anyone help with any details as to which batch this engine came from, and approximately what date it was made.
Some of the numbers are very hard to make out, but it looks like it says
Merlin III No 300?? The last 2 digits are very hard to make out, but under a magnifying glass it looks like 77.
Then at the bottom it says.
Right Hand Tractor 173970.
Thanks in advance.
Old Towzer.
