-The main advantage of the F-6 over the MiG-19S built in the 50s were the gains in the reliability. The main shortcoming was, neither the MiG-19 nor the F-6 offered any advantage over the later built MiG-21s in general.

-My favourite plane!
F-6 had incredible climb rate and its 23mm cannons gave it a great punch on ground attack role.
In PAF service it was modified with AIM-9P added, US radios and helmets, RWR, Pak designed Gondola belly tank and Martin Baker ejection seat.
Ironically, this Soviet designed jet was used to defend Pak air space against Soviet and Afghan planes in 80s.

-Some great photos. The picture of the MiG-19 loaded with an Atoll intrigues me. I have heard a mention that some MiG-19P's were fitted with Atolls, but never seen pictures or anything. Can anyone elaborate on that photo? I didn't think it was a MiG-19P when I first looked at it.

Well technically you almost were right.
The prototype Mig-19 was armed with 23mm guns.
The location for the AA-2/ Aim-9 is always interesting.
Have seen the AIM-9 located in both inboard pylons and outboard (of the fuel tanks).
While I have only seen pictures of the Atoll loaded outboard of the fuel tank.
The Mig-19 is my 2nd fav. "russian" aircraft of the cold ware era :D The Mig-21 still ranks number one.

-So is that example in the photo a modified MiG-19P?
Also...I'd like to clarify some questions I have regarding pylon configurations. I read that early MiG-19's (Farmer-A's) had two small pylons inboard of the two fuel tank pylons that were used for rocket pods. I've seen a picture to this effect though it's just of the wing so I have no idea what variant it might be.
When it comes to the MiG-19S/SF series though I've only heard of them having one much larger inboard pylon.
What was adopted as standard? My guess would be that most Farmer day fighter variants have four wing pylons, including the two that are mainly used for fuel tanks.
Any thoughts?

-My favourite Mig-19 variant is the Q-5/A-5 Fantan :D

-Are there any Farmers (or Chinese derivates) still in active service somewhere? I guess PLAAF has scrapped all theirs by now, but perhaps in some African country/ies..
TangoIII, the last pic in your post, do you know where its taken? The uniforms of the ground crew seem to suggest A-stan. Newer heard about MiG-19s serving there though.

-The only place where there might be Soviet made MiG-19 in service is North Korea.
Chinese F-6 and FT-6 are still serving in Tanzania and North Korea
FT-6 are still used as trainers in A-5 Fantan units in China, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sudan
The last picture posted by Tango III is likely taken in one of USSR's central Asian republics, during a live launch exercise.

-Now that there is allegedly a two-seat Q-5 (Q-5J I think), it makes you wonder if the JJ-6's will soon be replaced...

-Great photos! Thanks for sharing.
I have a question regarding that last one...it appears to be a MiG-19PM, but I thought only the Soviets had those? Did the Czechs both build and operate them or was that a Soviet example delivered to the Czechs?
By: 10th April 2010 at 12:28 Permalink - Edited 1st January 1970 at 01:00
-You're wrong, the MiG-19 PM (equipped with 4 AA-1 missiles and no guns) was exported to all Warsaw Pact countries.

-Look at those wing fences ... ugly.
The MiG-19 was something in the middle between a subsonic MiG-17 (with its ups) and the supersonic MiG-21 (with its ups). As usual in the Soviet Union, stuff was produced until it was truly and by all standards outdated.

Okay so perhaps not the most appropriate for the Modern section of the forum, but if it's not a prop there won't be much discussion about it in the historic section.
Anyways, I figured it would be interesting to see what pictures and discussion we can bring up about the MiG-19. Oddly enough, you hear a lot about the Chinese J-6 than the actual MiG-19 itself. I was hoping someone of you might have some interesting photos about actual MiG-19 variants as opposed to the J-6 or Q-5.
Pictures of Soviet MiG-19S/SF versions in particular are appreciated although the radar-equipped models would be neat as well.
Cheers!
