If you’ve been around flight simulation for a while you will have heard of head-tracking software/hardware. I’m not talking about apps such as Flight Tracker that tell you where a particular flight is at the current moment. I mean a product that allows you to look around the cockpit by the movement of your head. In fact, it’s not restricted to cockpits either; it will work with most games that operate from a first-person perspective. The point is it’s a more natural way of exploring your environment; it’s also quicker than reaching for the joystick button or whatever keyboard key you’ve assigned.
For those who are still in the dark, perhaps a product that most folk will be familiar with is Track IR from NaturalPoint Inc. It’s a product I know quite well because I’ve reviewed a number of its iterations in the past. There are a few companies producing similar products as well, some using eye detection, others using a modified webcam to detect head movement but most require some sort of target for the hardware to aim at.
