The facilities have been extended as part of an ongoing construction project
San Francisco Airport’s two nearest AirTrain stations have been awarded the ‘gold’ certification by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) programme.
The project also included the construction of a new station which is located at the Grand Hyatt at the hub, which was inaugurated back in 2019.
According to the airport, sustainability was the main priority when carrying out the building works. Some of the initiatives include the installation of a solar photovoltaic system on the roof, new water efficient fittings, recycling construction debris, testing indoor air quality and choose environmentally viable materials.
“The completion of the AirTrain extension to long-term Parking realised our vision to provide a seamless, clean energy connection between all of our terminals, parking, hotel and rental car facilities,” said Ivar Satero, airport director. “At the same time, the project continued our tradition of industry leadership in sustainable building design, construction, and operation. This LEED Gold certification is a tribute to the dedicated project team who transformed this vision into reality.”
The AirTrain stations were extended by 1,900 ft to reach the long-term parking area, running 50ft above the public roadway. A new station was also established with a pedestrian bridge which connects the facility to the parking zones.
Originally opening in 2003, the AirTrain was the largest people mover in North America.
