REVEALED: Why a 737 ditched in the ocean with a working engine

The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has concluded its investigation into the crash of Transair flight 810 which ditched in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Hawaii in 2021.

The incident made headlines at the time because of the flight crew’s miraculous escape from the cargo aircraft, which sunk quickly after it entered the water.

According to the NTSB’s final report, the Boeing 737-200C, N810TA (c/n 21116), “experienced a partial loss of power involving the right engine shortly after take-off and a water ditching in the Pacific Ocean about 11.5 minutes later.”

Investigators believe the flight crew misidentified the damaged engine after levelling off and reducing thrust, despite initially recognising the correct failed powerplant. This ultimately led them to conclude that both engines had lost power.

 

On July 2, 2021 at about 1.45am local time, the 46-year-old twinjet experienced an “engine anomaly” shortly after departure from Honolulu/Daniel K Inouye International Airport and was subsequently ditched into Mamala Bay (Pacific Ocean), about 5.5 miles southwest of the airport.

The captain sustained serious injuries, while the first officer (FO) was left with minor wounds.
