United Airlines rolled out its new livery at an event in Chicago on April 24. The revised colour scheme features enlarged titles, blue engine nacelles and a swooped demarcation line between the upper surface white and grey below. It is more of a refresh of the airline’s visual rather than a re-invention or rebranding.
The principles behind the change were said to be a desire to modernise the look while retaining blue, and timing it with cabin and service improvements. The airline calls the three shades of blue used Rhapsody Blue, United Blue and Sky Blue and says the colour has “always been our core”. Consequently, it decided to emphasise it at the expense of some other colours, such as gold, that had featured in the previous livery.
The cabin interiors, which are also being renewed, feature complementary colours such as purple and light blue. The globe fi n logo inherited from the merger with Continental in 2010 has been retained in modified form on a background using a gradient of the three blues. This “pays respect to United’s heritage while bringing a more modern energy” says the airline.
