Dragon Rapide progress at Old Warden

The classic machine was one of several on display at a special open day last month

The hard-working staff at Old Warden’s Shuttleworth Collection held an Engineering Open Workshop over the weekend of February 24 to 25, offering visitors a closer look at projects that are usually ‘behind the scenes’ or not in full view.

One of the many machines under scrutiny was 1945-built de Havilland Dragon Rapide G-AGSH which is destined to be returned to the colours it wore with BEA. Currently, wiring, control cables and instrument hoses are being renewed as required. Hawker Hind K5533 was also the focus of much attention – its 15 Squadron livery is being replaced by that of 605 Squadron. The Collection’s popular DH.88 Comet G-ACSS Grosvenor House is also coming together – visitors were able to see it devoid of engine cowlings and nose ‘cone’ over the weekend.
