-its probably the red deck.
Most American ships aside from their super carriers, look incredibly boring.
in terms of good looking ships:
Russians, British, Dutch, Germans
The French ships tend to be either really sleek or really awkward looking.
Japanese ships, aside from the Izumo, are boring as hell. Koreans too.

You missed the Italians in the aesthetics premier league...right up there in the rankings for my money!. Always thought that there was a lot of Italian influence in Russian naval design funnily enough.

-Yeah, let's just ignore the 20380, and the 22350 (you know, actual future projects not stopgaps like 11356) which all show good RCS reduction measures.
056 doesn't even make an attempt at mast integration.

i think you may need to post some examples of nice Italian ships to jog my memory.
Only Cavour strikes me as visually impressive.

20380 looks strange.. but I do like the Russian designs for their next destroyer.
here's hoping they make another Kiev-class type of ship with a new vstol aircraft instead of another kuznetsov style ship.

-Eyetie ships are rather boring too - they lack the brutish looks of the Russian ships.
I do like the Durand de la Penne and old Audace destroyers (retired 2006). But that's because they pack large gun armament (1 x 127mm, 3 x 76mm for Durand de la Penne and 2 x 127mm and 4 x 76mm for Audace).
I think gun armament was probably a better choice for Italians - NGFS + lots of coastal areas and lots of islands in Adriatic where missiles are more difficult to use (of course this was during the Cold War and there were outstanding territorial issues between Italy and Yugoslavia).
From memory even their Horizon class boats have 3 x 76mm guns.

I like em.

De La Penne
Wan has it right there is a certain similarity in the upperworks arrangement between Russian and Italian designs but, for me, its all about the hull lines. Look at the lines of those three above...the Kirov image that thobbes posted and the truly lovely shot of the Shirane Wan put up. Its a very hackneyed old line but tied alongside the De La Penne looks like she's doing 20knts!. Definite ship porn....off for one of my pills and a lie down now!.

The Italian navy uses 76 mm guns as CIWS, therefore the heavy gun armament. The new FREMM class ships have either one 127 mm and one 76 mm (general-purpose variant) or two 76 mm (ASM variant), here the lead ship of GP variant:
I think they also look cool. Also the new Russian ships look cool - but not that stealthy:

-The new Russia ships are fairly stealthy, I think. I think only visby and zumwalt, maybe LCS, are the most stealthy ships in service or under development.

There are plenty of other stealthy boats around...

-I think Blitzo is saying they (like the above vessel) don't appear anymore stealthy than say, the 22350, something I completely agree with.
Por ejemplo:

-Why is a project 22350 more stealthy compared to MEKO A-200SAN? Or e.g. a British Type 45?

-Why is a project 22350 more stealthy compared to MEKO A-200SAN? Or e.g. a British Type 45?
No one said gorshkov class was more stealthy, only that there was little discernible difference.
That said, the first 22350 hasn't even been fully fitted out yet, so the comparison is somewhat moot (yet by its shaping and mast, and CGIs we'll know it should be in the same class as most modern ships).
I think most modern ships since the mid 2000s all sit on the same scale of LO -- la fayette, shivalik, Type 45, horizon and fremm, meko 200, 054A, 052C/D, 22350, and others -- and the biggest differences are in deck and mast clutter, which they all sit on a small continuum on, and for those which do have some clutter, the edges of the bow cover it anyway.
Then there's your zumwalts and visbys, which I would argue have the right to sit in an upper category by themselves, convincingly above the rest of today's "stealthy" ships, whose management of RCS is only marginally better or worse than one another.
Obviously this is all opinion and conjecture, so feel through to ignore this post.

-E.g. the bulwarks at the bow of some of the Russian ships appear to be less stealthy compared to most other modern ships.

I think aesthetics is debatable and a very personal parameter even for modern military ships.
Methinks aesthetics derived from the number of guns installed on a ship is rather silly vs. e.g. the use of intelligent systems like the Aster 30 the Vulcano guided ammunitions: http://www.difesa.it/SGD-DNA/Staff/DT/NAVARM/Vulcano-EN/Pagine/Configuration2.aspx http://www.difesa.it/SGD-DNA/Staff/DT/NAVARM/Vulcano-EN/Pagine/Configuration3.aspx
In the future the guns will be more and more concealed and vanishing for low obesrvaibility purposes, so noramlly you will see less guns on the deck, whithout this implying a lesser fire power.

Anyway, here there comes a link to a recent pix gallery of the official MM website of the first 3 Italian FREMM delivered to Italian Navy together: http://www.marina.difesa.it/_Layouts/MMIV2-Layouts/pages/MMI.GalleriaFullscreen.aspx?PageId=b1e9238b-f981-41fe-bf41-712784ea8af8&Guid=c12a32fb-bf42-476e-81c6-a4c92fd074c1
MM will have from 8 of 10 of these frigates in service in the next years. Of course you are entitled to evaluate them as ugly or baddass.

Just reading up about Russian hovercraft and looking at pics of Russian cruisers which still look like cruisers.
Let's face it Russian gear is so much more cooler than Western stuff. It looks tough or crazy science fiction like or both..
