Incredible , considering that South Africa is one of the largest iron ore producing countries in the world with a highly developed mining sector.

Digging the stuff out of the earth is one thing-refining it and making it amagnetic is another. The Germans make a steel specifically for minehunters and subs that has the magnetic flux as air- ie. none at all.

I recall that nonmagnetic steel rusted profusly and that steel was no longer used.
