maybe it was originally intented as a simple, day light only fighter and the designers took that to the core?

-There is a light in the tail area that can be used to signal formation commands. Forget what the heck it is called.

-The F-16 has formation lights, but not the "traditional" strip lights
Take a peek at the attached and you'll see references to the 'white' formation lights above and below the fuselage.
Now as to why???? Heck if I know....

All modern US military aircrafthave them: the A-10, F-14, F-15, F/A-18, F/A-22, C-17, C-130J, .... even the Eurofighter Typhoon do have some of these "lightning stripes" ???
Why not the F-16 ??? :confused:
