Hugh ‘Jimmy’ James adjusted his age by a year when applying for the RAF and was just 17 when he started training to be a pilot at the beginning of World War Two. After graduating from flying tuition, he was sent to the Middle East to join 216 Squadron, equipped with transport aircraft.
