Military forces all over the world need a robust jet trainer and in 1952 the USAF started looking for one that would transition its pilots from basic prop trainers to the more powerful and advanced jet fighters of the era. One contender was produced by Cessna which chose to run with a side-by-side seating arrangement so the instructor and student could interact more efficiently than in a tandem design.
So well did the T-37 perform this role, it was used as the USAF primary jet trainer for an astonishing 50 years - with the USAF only retiring them in 2009. Over that time there were adaptations to the engines and some were configured to be used in light ground attack roles by fitting a pair of weapons pylons under the wings but the vast majority were enduring workhorses in the demanding area of pilot training.
